Montebelo Gorongosa Lodge & Safari is opened from April to December.

The best time for a safari is during the dry season, between April and November.
The rainy season in Mozambique goes from December to March.

The park's main attractions are the Lion House, the Hippo house, and the fauna sanctuary, as well as the walks to the Chiringoma limestone cliffs, the Urema lake, and the Murombozi River waterfalls, in the Gorongosa mountain.

 

Game Drives

Our Qualified safari guides will take you on an open game drive vehicle through a diversity of habitats, wildlife and outstanding birdlife. You will have the opportunity to look over spectacular floodplains and explore mystical fever tree and palm forests whilst searching for the resident wildlife. A remarkable diversity of antelope, numerous primates and an array of birdlife are always encountered. With luck you could find lions, elephants, buffalo, hippos and some really monstrous crocodiles. There are three safaris available daily to increase your chances of finding wildlife.

 

Game Drives

Full Day Safaris

Take a relaxed and tranquil full day safari to explore the different ecosystems and Gorongosa’s vastness searching for wildlife. You will stop at a scenic place for a picnic lunch, then continue your search for the wildlife, ending the day watching the last rays of the sun, then search for nocturnal animals on your return to Chitengo. Full day safaris are done in open safari vehicles and take a maximum of 10 guests.

Walking Safari

The perfect way to experience the beauty and wilderness of Gorongosa National Park. Our qualified guides will take you on an exciting bush walk, getting up close to botanical wonders, learn about animal signs and tracks, walk on animal paths and become one with nature. The walking safari takes a maximum of 4 guests, no children under the age of 12 are permitted. You will need neutral coloured clothing (Brown and Green), comfortable walking closed shoes and hat. Walking safari is subject to availability and season.

Boat Safaris

The spectacular lake Urema is home to enormous crocodiles, large pods of honking hippos and unbelievable aquatic birdlife. A boat safari is the perfect and only way to access the vast water wilderness – the heart of Gorongosa. Maximum number of guests is 6, and no children under the age of 12. Boat safaris cannot be confirmed in advance and are subject to availability and water levels.

Canoe Safaris

Allow the Pungué current to drift with you passing sandy beaches, reed beds and pristine riparian forests. Experience wonderful birdlife and photographic opportunities along the river. Canoeing can be done in the morning or the afternoon and at the end of you trip you will be met with coffee or sundowner drinks. There is a maximum number of 6 people, and children under the age of 12 are not permitted. Canoe safaris cannot be confirmed in advance and are subject to availability and water levels.

Visits to local communities

Stroll through the communities in the Gorongosa National Park buffer zone, interact with community members, and learn about how local Mozambicans live their daily lives. Learn about the projects and learn how the Park is helping to improve community livelihoods and help families be self-sufficient through community farming programs (including beekeeping, coffee, cashews and more).
